DO YOU NEED AN ENGINEER?
What is a Structural Engineer?
Unlike an architect who deals with the layout, form, and finishes of a building, a structural engineer is a professional that specialises in the structural elements of the building - both individually and as a whole, and has an understanding of how these elements support and remain stable for the applied loads. They can determine the strength of structures and buildings, using calculations based on scientific engineering principles. They provide advice on the structural elements for new buildings ensuring that they meet current design standards, and health and safety requirements. They also provide advice with respect to assessing existing structures, and the effect that proposed alterations or renovations may have on the existing building.
When would I need a Structural Engineer?
Structural engineers are generally required for two main types of services:
Building works / renovations
This includes both construction of new structures, extensions, dwellings etc., and alterations to existing structures or buildings. Basically, anything that involves a new construction or changes the structure of an existing building, would normally need the services of a structural engineer.
Structural engineers calculate the loads applied to the structure so that the new elements can be sized without having a detrimental effect on the complete building. Once these calculations have been finalised, suitable structural drawings are produced so that the relevant information can be relayed to the contractor in a clear and concise manor allowing the new works to be constructed.
Structural reports
Due to the complex nature of a building, there are a number of problems that can occur within a structure – generally highlighted by cracking and movement within the different elements of the building.
A chartered surveyor would typically be instructed if the issues relate to damp, building services, property value and so forth. However, if these issues appear to relate to the structural elements of the building, the services of a structural engineer would typically be required. This would normally involve the requirement to visit the building or structure to view the issues, and produce a report based on the findings. It should, however, be noted that the structural engineer can only comment on the structural elements of the building and only on those elements that are visible during the visit.
